Assasination Watch: Saudi Arabia

The Saudi crown Prince in dead. There is no successor, at least for now. If revolutionaries are going to strike they will strike now.

This is no joke. A kingdom is never more vulnerable than during a period of succession, and this is doubley so if there is no clear heir. Traditionally this was true because the new king had yet to consolidate power. Nobody (or at least very few) owed their wealth or rank to him. At the same time, everyone who did amass wealth and/or powers under the old monarch would be worried about losing it all to new appointments, new favorites. So they were usually willing (if not eager) to cut deals with any challengers to the thrown.

Historically, even the Romans used to wait until a king died before absorbing a territory. They took advantage of the natural flux — the power vacuum — and moved in.

Regardless, there’s no successor to the Saudi thrown right now, and until a new one is named the revolutionaries are looking at their best opportunity to overthrow the government that they’ve seen since the 1970s.

Be scared.
